Portland Child’s Room
We renovated this room for a little car lover and bibliophile.
The sloped ceiling and limited space informed our approach - we designed the bed on one side of the room with storage where the ceiling is the lowest, leaving floor space for play.
The low custom bed makes getting on and off easy , while the longer length keeps things comfortable for everyone on nights when only snuggling with Pa will do!
There’s plenty of space for books and stuffies and also a continuous surface where legendary races happen!
An existing bookcase was spiffed up and provides crucial toy storage. The small closet was outfitted with off-the-shelf drawers and wall storage to create a place for the other myriad objects of life.
When renovations revealed tongue-and-groove boards under the drywall, it was an easy decision to expose the charming original finish everywhere. We kept the drywall on a couple of the walls, though, and painted them with chalkboard paint tinted a dark shade of the gray used elsewhere in the room. They add a nice contrast and have become a favorite spot for family and friends to leave artful messages.
We skipped knobs and pulls to keep them from becoming poking hazards in the small space and used softened edges throughout. The light paint scatters light around, while the bright yellow accents add a cheerful pop to this little one’s retreat!
