Orinda Entry
Our clients loved the laid-back nature of their new front yard, with the mature live oaks providing a sheltered haven for birds and critters but wanted to update it to create a more inviting entry and robust retaining structure for the steep slope. We designed the stairway to naturally slow down the pace of movement through it; to have an easy, open feel with strategic places to stop and enjoy the space.
A bamboo composite with recycled content was used for the stairs to reduce maintenance – a client priority. The composite, along with the board-form concrete of the retaining walls, makes for interesting yet mellow hardscaping that blends with the natural surroundings.
On the periphery a visually airy metal fence keeps the neighborhood deer out as a cheery front gate welcomes people in. The lighting is discrete and designed to minimize light escape into the night sky – crucial at this ridge-top location.
