Dublin Backyard
With a concrete pad right outside the door, disparate planting set against the walls, and patchy grass covering the rest of the space, this client’s backyard was a tad uninviting. We decided to use light colored hardscaping materials – contemporary concrete pavers and light gravel to make the space brighter. We also moved the main lounging area further into the center of the garden to encourage movement through it. A wooden deck was designed around the existing cherry blossom tree to hide and protect the roots as well as to create a cozy conversation spot.
Plants at the threshold and the view of the beautiful tree beyond now draw people outside. A small water fountain adds to the garden-soundscape and is a magnet for hummingbirds. We also helped the clients in their plant selection on this project. Layers of plantings, including tall screening trees that provide a sense of privacy, and water-wise native flowering plants, create a lush and intimate environment.
